Realisation of Jiří David’s sculpture
The brief
For artist Jiří David we built the Key Sculpture, a seven-metre steel work made up of 80,000 keys that spell out the word Revoluce (Revolution). Originally a travelling sculpture dedicated to the legacy of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, it now stands in Olomouc-Hodolany. It was created as the culmination of a nationwide key collection organised by Vodafone, in which thousands of people took part. More on the artist’s intent and the concept behind the work
Solution
The sculpture consists of a steel structure and obsolete keys donated by citizens through a promotional campaign. For two months, we welded the keys one by one onto the structure and onto each other. The work was specific in many respects. For example, the centre of gravity of the massive sculpture is located outside the vertical axis and shifted continuously as production progressed.
Before moving, we divided the sculpture into three parts. For transport, we utilised two workers, a truck, a crane, and a platform. The installation was preceded by the construction of a concrete plinth. The sculpture was on tour for a year and visited several major cities in the Czech Republic.
